FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|
How long is a gigging charter?
As long as it takes us to find the fish. Sometimes we can find 10 fish
in an hour and sometimes we are on the water for 4 - 5 hours.
Why only two people per gigging charter?
Flounder gigging is a shallow water sport, and the boat is designed to float in just
inches of water. Limiting the weight on the boat allows us stay light enough to
move right up on the shorelines and reefs where the flounder feed.
When is the best time to go flounder gigging?
Anytime the wind isn't blowing!
The annual "Flounder Run" is a period of a few to several weeks that occurs in the
fall each year as the large female flounder leave the bays to move to their offshore
spawning grounds. Everyone wants to say that the run occurs in November, and it
is usually around this time, but the arrival of our first few cold fronts are what
really seem to get the fish moving. During the winter the small juvenile fish
remain in the bay, along some big sneaky old sows that really know how to hide.
The flounder make their way back home to the bay in the spring and start a new
flounder gigging season. The movement of the flounder back into the bay is
gradual, but typically by summer most of the large flounder have returned.
In November, the limit for flounder is 2 per day by rod and reel and no gigging is
allowed. The rest of the year you can enjoy the challenge of flounder gigging.
Where can I get a Texas Fishing License?
A fishing license may be purchased directly through Texas Parks and Wildlife.
(800) TX LIC 4 U or (800) 895 - 4248
Buy a License Online
Fishing licenses can also be purchased at any Academy or Wal-Mart. Both of these
retailers are located on Galveston Island along Seawall Blvd.
What do I need to bring?
Whether you are going gigging or trout fishing, all you need to bring along is your
Texas Saltwater Fishing License, a few cold beverages to enjoy on the boat, bug
spray and an ice chest to pack your fish home. Please, no dark-soled shoes and no
glass bottles.
What kind of fishing license do I need?
All anglers age 17 and up, whether bay fishing or gigging, will need a Saltwater
Fishing License. Everything from a 1 day license to a 1 year from date purchased
license is available, so you can choose what works best for you.
